IW008 - Season 1 Archipelago

iw008-season-1archipelagoX-800.jpg

It’s our Archipelago special, our Season One wrap-up, our island extravaganza where where we solve Island Watch mysteries such as how we choose our islands (and why some missed the cut), what we ate, and why our theme music is so darn catchy.

If this is your first Island Watch episode ever: please wend your way back into our feed and listen to a regular episode, to get a taste of what we do here because our Season One Archipelago Special episode is not the norm. It’s super fun, but it’s the ice cream on the pie, so to speak. (And who doesn’t like pie?!!)

News Of The World - Beachcomber Edition

Pulling together Island Watch isn’t just about previewing TV shows and movies (such sacrifice!)

Plenty of research is involved, which  means we stroll the virtual beaches of the world, looking for treasures, then haul back our collection to our onboard studio, where we sift through the goods to find the gold.

Our podcast is set with the gems we uncover, but there are so many jewels that we just couldn’t fit it all in our regular shows! And so, our Season One Archipelago Special features other finds from our travels. Here are the links we promised in our News of the World -Beachcomber Edition segment :

Beached! Episodes That Never Set Sail

It’s true. Island Watch left some shows stranded, just beyond Molly’s Reach.

Brady Bunch Hawaii Trilogy: The Brady Bunch was a heartwarming family show that has a longer life in rerun syndication than when it ran from 1969 - 1974.

The family vacation on Oahu in the Hawaii Trilogy. Their trip goes sideways when one of the kids finds an artifact. For a glimpse of the bad luck the family faces (and a taste of the island clichés the story relies on), see the opening and ending scenes of the middle episode, S04E02 Pass The Tabu.

Six Million Dollar Man - Survival Of The Fittest: The Six Million Dollar Man was another big hit from our childhood.

The second episode of the first season, Survival Of The Fittest, sees Steve and his boss Oscar stranded on a deserted island along with a planeload of passengers.

Move Over, Darling: What happens when someone comes back after having spent five years on a deserted island? How have their loved ones coped while the person was away? Move Over, Darling, a 1963 romantic comedy starring Doris Day and James Garner is mildly mirthful.

On the other hand, there were shows we watched that we loved, but we couldn't put them on our itinerary. Listen to find out why.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople: A 2016 film directed by Taika Waititi, Hunt For The Wilderpeople is about a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.

My Octopus Teacher: This film is set at sea, off the coast of South Africa, but not on an island. My Octopus Teacher is a 2020 documentary. Just jump into the waters, and get carried away by it.

A Musical Note

Our wildly wonderful Island Watch theme music is an essential element of our show. Hear it here:

We chat with Ted Gibbons, the man who made it come to life.

Ted is a jazz musician and math whiz. When he’s not developing new algorithms like the Metamobius, he makes cool, smooth music. Check out a performance at the Jazz Room, and sample some songs by the Ted Gibbons Duo.
