IW016 - Season 2 Archipelago

Who doesn’t love sailing through an archipelago? We end each season of Island Watch with a wander back through the highlights: how we planned our itinerary, what island eats we ate, and what makes islands so darn watchable!

If this is your first Island Watch episode ever: please wend your way back into our feed and listen to a regular episode, to get a taste of what we do here because our Archipelago Special episode is not the norm. It’s super fun, but it’s the extra cheese on the pizza, so to speak.

Beached! Episodes That Couldn’t Set Sail

You know how it is - you start out on a journey, only to realize it’s going nowhere. These are the shows that we left behind, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out why!

Mamma Mia (2008) Takes place on the fictional island of Kalokairi. Filmed mainly on the island of Skopelos, Greece.

Couples Retreat (2009) St. Regis Bora Bora Resort was renamed “Eden Resort” for this film.

The Others (2001) Surprise! Though set on the isle of Jersey in the British Channel Islands, The Others was actually filmed almost entirely in Spain!

Castaway (1987) Subtitle “not the Tom Hanks movie”. Based on Lucy Irvine’s travelogue. Her real-life adventures took place on Tuin, an island between New Guinea and Australia, but the movie was actually filmed on the islands of Praslin, Cousine, and La Digue in the Seychelles.

Cold Fever (1995) Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon are featured, of course, plus plenty more Iceland locations.

Island Chef

One of the things that makes Island Watch unique? Customized munchies for each show that we review. If you’re watching for a getaway, take it all the way, and get to cooking!

This episode, Gemma and Dave review highlights of our Island Watch Picnic Picks. Listen in to find out why we picked what we picked! Follow the links to the recipes.

  • What does a taco bar have to do with The Wilds?

  • It’s Carnival! Trinbagonian food will keep you dancing all the way through our second episode of the season, Bazodee

  • Family life on Cape Breton, complete with date squares and chocolate cake in New Waterford Girl.

  • Lots of choices for Top End Wedding, but pick the croissant to recreate some classic comedy.

  • Hmmm… a piece of Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’s titular pie or a slice of Guernsey Gâche? Perhaps a nip of infused gin will aid in the decision.

  • Ainsley’s Caribbean Kitchen is so packed with great things to eat, you may need to spend months working your way through all the recipes. Make the sacrifice.

  • Finally, for our South Pacific documentary episode, we looked at making sustainable seafood choices.

Let us know which of our Picnic Picks are your favourites! And if you have suggestions to add to our menus to date, send them in! We’d lo-ooove to hear from you.
